The donor pathway
How a dog joins the programme.
Screening begins at home. Donation is planned around the dog, and we do not use routine sedation. Every collection is processed and released against a specific patient request.

Meet & screen at home
We begin with your dog in familiar surroundings, then arrange the full veterinary assessment, blood count, liver and kidney panels, and PCR screening for tick-borne disease. All at no cost to you.

Donate without sedation
We select dogs who are comfortable with gentle handling so routine sedation is not needed. Collection takes roughly ten minutes and is supervised throughout by our veterinary team.

Released for a patient
Each unit is separated into leukocyte-reduced packed red cells and plasma. A compatible component is released only against a request from the treating veterinarian at a registered participating practice.
What we prepare

A single whole blood collection is separated into two distinct products, so one dog’s generosity can support more than one patient. Every unit is leukocyte-reduced to lower the risk of febrile transfusion reactions.
01 — Cellular component
Packed red blood cells
Red cells concentrated after plasma separation, for patients who need oxygen-carrying capacity restored rather than volume replaced.
Indicated in immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia, tick fever, chronic blood loss, surgical haemorrhage and trauma.

Fresh frozen plasma
Plasma separated and frozen promptly to preserve labile clotting factors, albumin and immunoglobulins.
Indicated in rodenticide toxicity, coagulopathy, hypoproteinaemia, severe pancreatitis and sepsis with consumptive coagulopathy.

We are unable to supply blood products directly to pet parents. If your animal needs a transfusion, the treating veterinarian contacts us and retains clinical responsibility for the patient.

Could my dog become a blood donor?
Possibly. We enrol healthy dogs between one and nine years of age who are comfortable being handled and whose families can commit to the programme. Every candidate is assessed by our veterinary team before enrolment.
Is donating safe for my dog?
Donor welfare decides everything. Each dog is screened with a full blood count and liver and kidney panels before enrolment, examined again on every visit, and a donation only goes ahead when our veterinarian is satisfied that it is appropriate for that individual animal on that day.
What does my dog get out of it?
Every enrolled donor receives a complete health screen, annual vaccination, deworming and tick fever prevention at no cost. Every dog in the donor household also receives priority access to a compatible product if they ever need a transfusion. Any request must come through the treating veterinarian and remains subject to clinical suitability and availability.
Can I get blood for my own dog if they ever need it?
Dogs in an enrolled donor household receive priority access if any of them ever need a compatible product. The request must come from the treating veterinarian, who remains responsible for the transfusion decision. Release depends on clinical suitability and product availability.
Who can receive the blood products?
Blood products are supplied to registered veterinary practitioners only. We cannot issue blood to pet parents directly. If your animal needs a transfusion, your veterinarian requests the product from us.
